We had a heated argument last night at work about top speed. A guy claimes that all bikes have governors on them that only allow them to go 184MPH. He claimes that it doesn't matter which bike you have....but from 2001 to present, there is no 100% stock bike that can go faster than 184MPH.

I argued this because of the following:
I have a 2004 R1:

I burried my speedometer....189 MPH no problem and can still feel it move up faster.
I drove with a GPS in my pocket and I burried the speedometer for 10 minutes without letting off the gas period and the GPS said I hit 197MPH. Also, when I did let off the gas, it took about 10 seconds for the speedometer to read less than 189MPH.
I have a few buddies that ride with me that claim they are going 180's and I'm leaving them behind.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the SPEEDOMETER is wrong, maybe the GPS is wrong also, but could the 2 be wrong together???

I want to know what the fastest the following will go 100% stock.

2004-06 R1
2004-06 GSXR1000
2004-06 ZX10
2004-06 CBR1000RR
2001-06 Hayabusa

I gotta call :bs on this also. The only part that is true is that the speedo tops out at 189.

This thread should get good.:corn

it is 186 mph, but the new zx-14 will break that most likely, it would likely take around 200 rear wheel hp to get to 200 mph on an r1

for actuall top speeds of bikes check the performance numbers on sportrider.com and while your at it vote for the r1

motorcycle manufactuers started a self policing policy of top speed restricted to 186 mph back in 2000. they did it before the govts step in and made it madatory for them. So yes there are restrictions on bikes capable of going little faster. the zx14 will likely be limited to same, but im sure there will be TRE or way around it for those who want to do top speed stuff legally**. but unless ur r1 was dropped out of airplane there is no way it went 197 GPS stock. prolly gps inaccurate.

How did you keep holding on after the stock tires disintegrated on minute 5?

Don't get the flame thrower out!! But I believe that it's the ECU that controls the govenor? If you get an ECU out of a bike made for Europe they don't have the govenor and then you are not limited. Know what we need is the rocket scientists on here to figure out top speed as calculated by the gear ratios??? 10,750 engine RPM's to front spocket to rear sprocket times the circumference of the stock wheel minus 6mm for the flat spot from riding to many highways and downtown ='s top speed the bike is capable of.

I'm not stock anymore, but I do burry the speedo all the time. I know its off now because of my sprocket change....but when I did this....it was all stock.

How accurate is the Speedo at high speeds???

How accurate would a GPS be at high speeds???

im going to go out on a limb and say..............not very accurate

did you look at the chart on sportrider.com it proves your friend was correct sorry, the 99 busa was over 190, then the 01 was under 186, and the zx-12 was just under 186 the r1 was i think 182
